The NASA Education Sandbox 2008

Sandbox - Location - Plan - People - Product - Other

Welcome

The Aerospace Education Services Project will host its first annual Education Sandbox meeting this summer at Penn State University. The primary goal of the meeting is to generate ideas, materials, and plans related to K-12 education on topics related to lunar exploration.

Sessions open to everyone: Sessions on Thursday, June 5 and Friday morning, June 6, will be open to the public. In particular, we welcome participation on those days by faculty and staff from colleges and universities affiliated with NASA's National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program. Sessions on Thursday and Friday morning are intended to provide information and technical planning assistance to individuals who wish to apply for grants from the AESP mini-grants CAN, a $300,000 opportunity being administered by the National Space Grant Foundation. A draft version of the CAN and other resources are available here. Please note that Thursday and Friday sessions are free and open to the public, but Space Grant participants will need to make their own arrangements for travel and accommodations. More info...

For more information, please contact Janell Howe at (814) 865-3525 (juh6@psu.edu).

A Sandbox?

A place where otherwise-serious people come together to play with ideas.

Meeting Location

Most sessions will be held in Chambers Building, a pleasant 15-minute walk from the Brill Hall residence (Eastview Terrace), where most participants will stay. The Blue Loop, a free bus, runs all day during the summer, M-F.

Please note: After we posted initial bus instructions, the University announced route changes for the Blue Loop because of summer construction. The best bus stop from Eastview Terrace is on the north side of Bigler Rd. (bus heading west). Returning to Eastview Terrace on the Blue Loop, get off at the temporary Pollock Hall stop. The best Blue Loop stop at the Chambers end of the route is at Rec Hall. The link above provides a map. Although the Red Link is an alternative, it runs less often and has lengthy side trips to other locations.

We will also make one minivan run from Brill Hall to Chambers at 8 a.m. each morning and back to Brill at the end of the day.

Toolkit

We've been assembling a collection of tools for future use in professional development courses. Most of the materials are open source. Online access to the draft toolkit will be provided to registered participants prior to the meeting.
